Zhu Yuanzhang overthrew the rule of the Mongols in 1368 A.D., establishing the Ming Dynasty in the capital of Nanjing. Nanjing became the capital of the United Kingdom for the first time. After the Emperor Yongle moved the capital to Beijing, the former capital of Nanjing remained the political, economic and cultural center of South China. During the Ming Dynasty, Nanjing was the key base and consumption center of Chinese gold and jade production. Many types of gold and jade as well as novel modeling techniques reached an unprecedented level. The gold and jade wares of the Ming Dynasty had inherited the tradition of the Tang and Song Dynasties, but formed their own distinctive techniques, creating an original style of gold jade craft. The exhibition is divided into two parts: “Jewelry crown” and “Elegant furnishings”. The first part is larger and in quantity covers more than 60% of all the displays, categorized as tiaras, hair ornaments, earrings, finger ornaments, wristlets, clasp belt decorations, accessories and so on. The second part focuses on gold and jade wares and elegant furnishings.
